How it all started
While Santi has been into sports basically all his life, I have not. Or not really. I did do some team sports in High School (Basket Ball and Crew) and I was also into different kinds of adventure sports all through my youth (Skiing and Wakeboarding mostly), however I was never really any good at it and never obtained any capacity for endurance sports.
Santi and I married when I was 29 and our two children were born soon after. I remember my thirties as the decade of diapers, vaccines, playdates - and being a full time working executive with lots of travel for work. Over those years, I put on some extra weight and always felt tired and worn out.
A few months before my 40th birthday, I realised that basically all I did everyday was get up, go to work, come home, solve family logistics and go to bed. I was starting to have health problems (with my blood sugar) and while I was the youngest, and only female, member of the Sales Director team in my company - all the others were in better shape than me. All in all, I felt unhealthy and unhappy but didn’t know how to change it.
One evening, Santi asked if there was anything special I wanted for my birthday. I was unable to come up with an answer at first. Until, some days later, I was sitting in my day-to-day traffic jam and an idea popped up:
What if I hired a personal trainer to help me break out of my sedentary, inactive life style?
From personal experience, I knew it was not the same to go on a self-controlled diet, as compared to having a professional nutritionist give you tips and guidance - and follow up on how well you are sticking to the plan. So I thought that having a trainer would increase my chances of breaking the vicious circle of “I am tired so I don´t feel like working out - I don´t work out so I always feel tired”.
Being that I travelled a lot for work, I made the practical decision that my goal would be to learn how to run. I could take the running shoes along on my travels and run around the hotel’s neighbourhood. My thought was that, once I was able to run 5k at a decent pace (say, in 30 minutes), I would be able to pick up any other sport which would be more fun than running.
After work, when I came home, I shared my thoughts with my husband…
Would you pay a 25 year-old to bring your wife into shape? My hubby did!
So, one week after my 40th birthday, on April 4, 2016, my new life began.
